VITAMINS Top

1.

Does everyone need vitamins? Yes; vitamins are essential nutrients for good health. By definition, vitamins must be gotten from outside the body—from the foods we eat and the supplements we take. With today’s modern lifestyle and dietary practices, it’s very difficult to get adequate amounts of all vitamins from diet alone. As we age, this becomes even more difficult. A healthy diet can provide enough nutrition to prevent deficiency states, but higher levels of nutrients are important for maintaining optimum health. Nutrition feeds the body systems that protect us, and help our organs remain healthy to perform their vital functions. For everyone, young or old, vitamin supplementation makes good sense.
2.

Are there different types of vitamins? There are two types of vitamins: water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins are not stored in the body and should therefore be replenished daily. Water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, biotin, and folic acid. A water-soluble vitamin is excreted from the body within one to four days. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body in the fatty tissue of the liver. Because they are stored in the body, fat-soluble vitamins can become toxic at extremely high doses. This, however, is rarely a concern, but should be noted in such cases as vitamin D supplementation. Fat-soluble vitamins include vitamins A, D, E, and K. Nutrition experts now recognize a third class of vitamins, known as pseudovitamins. These nutrients have vitamin-like properties, but have not been classified as true vitamins. They include the B-vitamin related nutrients choline, inositol, and PABA (para amino benzoic acid), along with newer discoveries like vitamins B15 (pangamic acid) and B17 (laetrile). Also included in the pseudovitamins are vitamin F (essential fatty acids), and vitamin P (bioflavonoids). All of these pseudovitamins are water-soluble.Why use herbs? Human beings have used herbal products to promote health as far back as recorded history can illustrate. Before the advent of modern allopathic medicine, nature was our pharmacy. In fact, were it not for historical records and common use of herbs in cultures throughout the world, many of our modern pharmaceutical agents would never have been discovered. Herbs are known to perform many beneficial functions when used appropriately. Our modern society is just now beginning to re-learn the value these natural products offer. Scientific investigations using new, high-tech evaluation techniques have proven the benefits some herbs offer, while others are still under investigation. Allopathic and natural medicine are coming together in a cooperative manner to produce what is now being called “complementary medicine,” a system of care that offers the best of both worlds. Herbal remedies can be very potent but are less likely to cause side effects than most synthetic products. Herbs contain active ingredients found in different parts of the plant, with varying potencies determined by growth stage and condition, harvesting, processing, and other variables. The scientific community is now focusing on isolating key active ingredients and concentrating them into standardized products to deliver consistent support. Examples of our most popular herbs include Bilberry, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo biloba, and Saw Palmetto.
3.

In what form can you purchase herbs? Herbs can be purchased in many forms including capsules, softgels, and tinctures. The most common form is that of a capsule containing the whole, dried herb from the part of the particular plant that offers nutritive benefits (e.g., root, leaves, blossoms). A softgel is basically a soft capsule that allows oils and other liquids to be provided in pill form. Herbs can also be found in tincture form, which are usually alcohol extracts expressed in ratios (e.g., 10:1, meaning ten parts whole herb yields one part extract). The next and perhaps most important form is that of a standardized extract, which can be a capsule, tincture, or softgel. Standardized extracts are designed by isolating the active ingredient(s) of a particular herb. This isolated ingredient becomes the “marker” used to measure the potency of the final extract. By combining extracts from the same herb, scientists can concentrate the active ingredients to specific levels, creating consistent, reliable doses of the active principles of an herb.
4.

What does the term “standardized” mean on herbal products? The term “standardized” refers to uniform potency. Standardized extracts are designed to deliver consistent, reliable levels of active components. Researchers begin by isolating the active ingredient(s) of a particular herb. This isolated ingredient becomes the “marker” used to measure the potency of the final extract. By combining extracts from the same type of herb, scientists can concentrate the active components to specific levels, creating consistent doses of the active principles for reliable nutritional support.
5.

What is an antioxidant? As the word suggests, an antioxidant is “anti” or against oxidation (oxygen in its toxic state). Just as oxidation damages metal in the form of rust, oxygen in its toxic state (also known as a free radical) can oxidize, or damage cells in the human body. Antioxidants are compounds found naturally in the body and in the nutrients we consume through foods and supplements. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that invade your system and damage healthy cells. They can be produced by normal activity in the body as well as environmental toxins, poor dietary and lifestyle habits, pollution, and stress. Free radicals are short-lived, highly reactive molecules that contain one or more unpaired electrons. They damage healthy cells by stealing from them. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals by donating electrons to free radicals, thereby saving healthy cells that may otherwise be damaged. Increasing concentrations of antioxidants is often necessary to maintain their protective activity for optimum health. Some of our most popular antioxidant supplements include vitamin E, grapeseed extract, beta-carotene, and garlic.
6.

Why are there so many different “delivery systems” or forms, of supplements? Health n Beyond offers thousands of quality products to choose from. We have six basic delivery systems, or forms, of supplemental nutrients. There are distinct reasons, ranging from scientific to common sense, for manufacturing and consuming these products in a particular form. Following is a brief description of the six most common forms (delivery systems) of dietary supplements:
*

Tablets: Some nutrients are most effective in tablet form. The primary advantages, however, are price and convenience. Tablets are the economical choice for the savvy consumer
*

Capsules: Capsules are easier for some people to swallow than tablets and allow nutrients that cannot be made into tablets to be offered in “pill” form.
*

Softgels: Softgels are easy to swallow, and absorb faster and more completely. Plus, the softgel makes possible supplements never before available. Softgels are typically oil-based, which allows nutrients that cannot be dried and made into tablets or capsules to be furnished in “pill” form. Certain supplements can only be made in softgel form, while others, though also available in dried form as capsules, are more beneficial when taken as a softgel.
*

Caplets: Caplets are sort of a hybrid delivery system designed to combine the benefits of a tablet with the convenience and ease of a capsule. They allow for capsule-like delivery of supplements best taken in tablet form.
*

Powders: Powders offer a number of benefits over pill-type supplements. They can be mixed with water or juice both for convenience and taste. Powders can increase both the amount of nutrients absorbed as well as the absorption rate, so your body benefits faster and more completely.
*

Liquids: Much like powders, liquids are easy to swallow and offer great absorption qualities. Sublingual liquids, which are taken under the tongue, are among the fastest-acting supplements available. As with other delivery systems, some dietary supplements are most effective when taken in liquid form.
7.

What does the “ester” in Ester-C mean? Ester-C® is calcium ascorbate, a non-acidic form of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) that is buffered with calcium to make it gentler on the stomach.* Technically speaking, an ester is any compound formed from an alcohol and an acid by the removal of water. The esters are named as if they were salts of the acid. In this case ascorbic acid (vitamin C) becomes calcium ascorbate because the acid is bonded with calcium. This bonding neutralizes the acidity of vitamin C, making it gentler on the stomach than other forms of the vitamin. *Ester-C® is a registered trademark of Oxycal Laboratories Inc.
8.

What is the difference between natural and dry vitamin E? Natural vitamin E softgels and capsules can contain vitamin E in either oil or dry form. Natural dry E contains d-alpha tocopheryl succinate, a powder form more suitable for those who have trouble digesting fats and oils.
What is the difference between glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate? Glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are two closely related compounds found in joint tissues. You make glucosamine in your body and use it to make the cushioning cartilage in your joints. As you age, you lose your ability to make glucosamine. Chondroitin works with glucosamine to replenish collagen and other components of joint tissues. It also draws fluid to the cells. This fluid provides lubrication to help joints glide smoothly with each motion.
9.

Can you recommend something for joint pain or arthritis? The Australian Health Board does not allow the supplement industry to make any recommendations regarding specific medical conditions. Our dietary supplements provide support for specific nutritional needs, and are not intended to cure, treat or prevent any disease or condition. What we can tell you is that glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate are our most popular products for promoting healthy joints. We get many calls from customers who tell us how happy they are with our joint health supplements.
10.

What is CoQ10? CoQ10 is short for coenzyme Q-10, a vitamin-like compound that is made naturally in the body. A coenzyme is a substance needed for proper functioning of an enzyme, a protein that speeds up the rate at which chemical reactions take place in the body. The Q and the 10 in coenzyme Q-10 refer to parts of the compound’s chemical structure. Coenzyme Q-10 is found in most body tissues, where it plays a role in cellular energy production.
11.

Why should I take CoQ10? Although it is most commonly used for its role in cardiovascular health maintenance, CoQ10 (also called coenzyme Q10) has many beneficial effects throughout the body. In fact, CoQ10 is found in every cell in the human body, where it plays a crucial role in energy production. This makes it especially important in organs and systems with high-energy requirements, like the heart and the immune system. Studies indicate that CoQ10 also acts as a potent antioxidant.
